Several Bourland, Wall & Wenzel, P.C. attorneys specialize in dealing with the legal issues affecting religious professionals and religious organizations. In the early 1990s, attorneys Michael Bourland, William R. (Butch) Korb, and Sheila Korb recognized a growing need for a proactive approach on the part of churches with respect to legal issues. In response, the first edition of the desk reference Keeping Your Church Out of Court was drafted in 1994. Mr. Bourland and Mr. and Mrs. Korb began conducting workshops across Texas to educate church leaders on critical legal issues such as incorporation, negligence claims, and governmental compliance. The desk reference was updated in 1997 (the 2nd Edition) to include additional information as well as additional forms helpful to churches and church leaders in their efforts to deal with a myriad of legal issues. Along with the 2nd Edition came continued growth of the ministry including growth beyond the borders of Texas as church leaders in other states began to be exposed to the materials. The book now includes a Texas edition, a Mississippi edition, a Louisiana edition, a Georgia edition, a Spanish version of the Georgia edition and may soon include a Spanish version of the Texas edition. Mr. Bourland, Mr. and Mrs. Korb, and Darren Moore (also an attorney of Bourland, Wall & Wenzel, P.C.) have conducted conferences across Texas as well as in Louisiana, Mississippi and Georgia.
